Description:

Cartes-de-visite photograph album containing 6 tintypes and 33 albumen cartes-de-visite (3 of which are hand-colored), of men, women and children, and reproductions of genre scenes. The album was originally covered with blue cloth and had a metal fastener, of which only the back cover and part of the clasp remain. The verso of the first page of the album is inscribed: "Presented To. Ellinor F. Kingsland By A. [Gund?] July 16th '62," and the facing page has "The Photograph Album" printed in green and silver ink. Following the title page is an index of portraits. Although the index does not correspond with the photographs contained in the album, several listed portraits are present, specifically one of Mrs. Thomas and one of Willie Thomas. Other identified sitters include: The Prince and Princess of Wales, Gen. Tom Thumb and his wife and child, and the American financier James Fisk. The majority of photographs are by unidentified photographers. Known photographers of the tintypes include: Nichols' (N.Y.), and Ramsdell (of the Pearl Picture Gallery). Known photographers of the cartes-de-visite include: 2 each by E. Balch (N.Y.), E. & H. T. Anthony (N.Y.), and R. A. Lord (N.Y.); and 1 each by Joseph Hall (N.Y.), J. Gurney & Son (N.Y.), Peter Kohlbeck (N.Y.), Bundy & Williams (New Haven, Conn.), J. Wood (N.Y.), Stoutenburgh & Rolf (Newark, N.J.), R. S. De Lamater (Hartford, Conn.), Whitney & Beckwith (Norwalk, Conn.), On-Qua (Shanghai), R. A. Lewis (N.Y.), Mathew Brady (N.Y.), Charles D. Fredricks & Co., and Thwaites & Co. (N.Y.). Time period represented by the album is 1862 to 1866. A snapshot of a man in a car (988:0049:0001) that was looses within the album is housed separately.
