Description: |
A disbound, and possibly incomplete, album of sixty albumen photographic prints documenting a trip to Egypt and the Holy Land. The majority of the photographs are by Antonio Beato (23). Other photographers represented include P. Bergheim (12), Felix Bonfils (8), Dumas (3), and Robertson & Beato (2). The maker(s) of the remaining twelve photographs is unidentified. Half of the images from the album are views of monuments and architecture in Egypt, including mosques in Cairo, the pyramids and Sphinx at Giza, the ruins at Philae, and the Temple of Karnak. The images of the Holy Land focus on sites of Biblical significance. While the majority of these images focus on Jerusalem, there are also images of Bethany, Jericho, the Jordan River, and the Dead Sea. Notable monuments featured include: Dome of the Rock, the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, the old city gates of Jerusalem, the monastery of Mar Saba, and the Wailing Wall (a.k.a., the Western Wall). |
