Description:

Photograph album containing a 165 photographs of various formats which date from 1866 to 1889. The album may have belonged to a Rev. A. B. Sole, as his name is signed on the verso of several prints, and one print bears an inscription to him, but it is unknown who compiled the album. The majority of the photographs are portraits (individual and group), with a few art reproductions, two photographs of sculpture, and two landscape photographs of Switzerland and Malvern, England. The individual portraits are largely of men and boys, but women, girls and an infant are also represented. Group portraits are of both families and of sports teams. A large number of the individuals and sports teams are related to Cambridge University and its crew team, as identified by labels and inscriptions. Of the 165 photographs, 116 are cartes-de-viste (8 of which are loose), 32 are cabinet cards (5 of which are loose, and one of which is unbacked and inserted into an album page), 15 are albumen prints of varying sizes mounted to the album pages, and 2 are photocollages. Also inserted into one of the album pages is a non-photographic colored card of the crest of Cambridge University. The photographers and photographic studios of most images are known, with only 26 items unlabeled. Photographers best represented are: Hills & Saunders (28), Ellis (10), Thomas Heaviside (8), J. Laing (7), Adams & Stilliard (6), and N. J. Suter (4). Photographers represented by 3 photographs each are: County of Gloucester Studio, Debenham & Smith, A. F. Lafosse, and Lambert Weston & Son.
