[Mixed album of drawings, news clippings, plates, pictures]

unidentified photographer

No. of Items:

1 item

Span Dates:

circa 1860s-circa 1870s

Description:

Scrapbook, bound in dark green leather, dedicated to the decorative arts. Contained within are mounted clippings, wallpaper samples, paper doilies, watercolors, and illustrations (some color, and some engraved from photographs), in addition to 12 loose items. In addition there is one albumen carte-de-visite of an Asian, or Asian-inspired, bamboo screen. Most of the images are of furniture, curtain arrangements, and mirror frames. There are also a number of illustrations of decorative architectural details, and samples of decorative trademarks of a variety of businesses and products. The album appears to have been used as a journal of sorts, prior to its use as a scrapbook, based on the fact that in a number of places lined paper with writing shows through gaps in the mounted illustrations and through white spaces in illustrations. From what text can be made out, the content appears to record work orders for furniture and drapery for different houses and people. The majority of the clippings date to the 1860s and 1870s and are English in origin.
