Description: |
Published portfolio, entitled A Season In Hell (New York: Limited Editions Club, 1986), containing eight photographs by Robert Mapplethorpe (American, 1946-1989). Issued in a full red morocco leather portfolio with black lettered title, it contains two leaves of letterpress (title page and colophon) and eight leaves of photogravures. From the colophon: "This edition consists of 40 sets, numbered 1-40, ten artists proofs, numbered AP I-X, and five printers proofs, numbered I-V PP. The dust-grain photogravure plates were made by Jon Goodman. These plates were editioned by Peter Pettengill in two colours. The first colour (black) was wiped into the etched areas of the copper plates, with the second colour (transparent yellow) rolled onto the surface as a final step in preparing the plate for printing". The Ransom Center's copy is number three of the printer's proofs, and each plate is numbered, signed, and dated by Mapplethorpe. Plate information follows. |
