Description:

The Ernest Hemingway Literary File consists of over 1500 images, chiefly of Ernest’s childhood and family members (siblings, parents, grandparents, and siblings’ spouses and children), and of his parents’ travels in the United States and Cuba. Formats include cartes-de-visite, cabinet cards, matted and unmatted formal portraits, snapshots, daguerreotypes, ambrotypes, tintypes, glass negatives and positive transparencies, and a nitrate negative. Most of the snapshots were made by Ernest’s father, Dr. Clarence Edmonds Hemingway.

Access Restrictions:

Curatorial permission, plus advance notice, is required to access the negatives and glass plate positive in this collection. To make an appointment, please contact Reading and Viewing Room staff.
