Description: |
Nineteenth-century album likely dating the 1860s and primarily containing photographic portraits of Prussian and Italian royalty, and of women and children from New York and New Jersey. The 21 photographs (991:0022:0001-0021) are nearly all albumen cartes-de-visite, one of which is hand-colored, but also included is one tintype in a card mat. Identified photographers and studios follow: John Austen (American, 1820-1874); Celestino Degoix (Italian, active 1860s-1870s); Edward George Lacey (American, born England, 1846-1916); Knowlton & MacGregor (American, active circa 1970s); Carl Krause (German, active 1870s-1880s); Étiene Neurdein (French, 1832-1918) or Neurdein frères (French, active circa 1850s-1880s); George Frank Edgar Pearsall (American, 1841-1927); and Longworth Powers (American, active Italy, 1835-1904). The album is bound in a marquetry binding with a provincial scene of a man and woman tending to a chicken and four baby chicks on the front board. Inscribed on the back board in black Gothic script is "Nizza," possibly referring to Nizza Monferrato in the Piemonte Region of Italy. The album has a Leather spine, hinged metal clasps, and four decorative seashell rivets on the front and back boards. Laid into the album is a newspaper clipping of a poem titled "An Aesthetic" that was extracted from The Argosy. The first line reads, "She was a maiden of mournful mien". One photographic reproduction of an intaglio print of a sculpture of the bust of Michelangelo by Renaissance sculptor, Giambologna, and 20 photographic prints (some reproductions of intaglio prints) of royalty from the House of Hohenzollern, the House of Savoy, and individual women and children from New York and New Jersey. All prints are 6 x 9 cm or smaller. Some of the cards have various inscriptions on the back. The creator of the album is unidentified. |
