Description: |
The collection consists of 194 photographs by John Shaw Smith (Irish, 1811-1873). Included are 80 calotypes (negatives) and 39 salted paper prints (positives) by Smith, and 75 gelatin silver prints made in the 20th century by Helmut Gernsheim from many of Smith's original negatives. The subject matter is predominantly Egyptian ruins and views of Rome and Paris. Time period represented is 1850 to 1852. The photographs, by process, break down as follows. |
