Description:

The collection consists of 175 photographic prints and postcards taken and/or collected by Charles Morse Freeman (American, 1855-1936), a U.S. Consul stationed in Durango, Mexico from 1907 to 1911. The majority of the images depict the Mexican War for Independence and the presence of the American Consul and his family in Durango at that time. The photographs include gelatin silver and albumen prints, including 19 cartes-de-visite taken in 1866 and 1867. Several photographs are mounted to three loose pages from an album. Also included are 20 postcards of scenic views and commerce and architecture, approximately half of which were sent from Freeman to his daughter Mary Freeman in 1907. The majority of the photographs were probably taken by Freeman, but other photographers represented include: Valleto y Cia (4); Cruces y Campa (2); Carlos Ritchie (2); “A.E.J.”; Barney of Durango; “E.M.S.”; Jules Hubert; Montes de Oca of Mexico City; and Pach of Mexico City. The materials date from circa 1860 to 1911.
