Description: |
The collection consists of mostly albumen cartes-de-visite (357) and cabinet cards (3) of nineteenth century portraits of prominent literary and public figures made by well-known photographers and photographic studios of the day. (Three are carbon prints; one is gelatin or collodion silver print.)
Subjects include American, English, French, and Scottish authors, poets, and humorists, editors and newspapermen, historians, philosophers, naturalists, various teachers, college faculty and presidents, composers, and popular songwriters. Also featured are political figures, various U.S. and European cabinet officers, legislators, and diplomats, Army officers from the U.S. Civil War, and numerous abolitionists and suffragists.
The work of 103 photographs is represented, with the work of the following most heavily represented: Abraham Bogardus (American, 1822-1908), Mathew Brady (many of which were published by Edward and H. T. Anthony), W. & D. Downey, C. D. Fredricks, Eliott & Fry, J. Gurney & Son, the London Stereoscopic & Photographic Co., Jose Maria Mora, Felix Nadar, Pierre Petit, Charles Reutlinger, George Rockwood, Napoleon Sarony, and G. K. Warren. |
