The collection consists of 184 photographs, which date between circa 1920 and circa 1950, taken and collected by journalist and novelist Elias Tobenkin (American, born Russia, 1882-1963). Subjects include: Russian theater, street scenes, architecture, peasant lifestyle, postcards, portraits and group portraits; Russian people and life following the Bolshevik Revolution of 1917; groups of writers; the editor of The New Solviet Enyclopedia; portraits of the Romanovs; portraits of Demian Bedny, Lenin, Joseph Stalin, Leon Trotsky; and the Selsoviet of Kopil (Trade Union of Kopil). Photographers whose work is included in the collection are Herbert Paxton, Press Cliche, and Parikas. Many of the photographs came from the New York Tribune.
