Description:

The collection consists of materials collected by Helmut and Alison Gernsheim. The collection maintains the organization, which is generally by subject or location, devised by the Gernsheims. Boxes and brief descriptions of their contents follow. Select subjects are followed by a number in parentheses that indicates the number of prints present.

Box 1, Subjects: Aeronautics to Scientific -- Aeronautics (964:0102:0001-0003); Children (964:0102:0004-0007); Dance, theatre, music, circus acts and magicians (964:0102:0008-0024); Polar explorers (964:0102:0025); Railroads (964:0102:0026-0028); and Scientific and experimental photographs (964:0102:0029, 964:0103:0001-0004).

Box 3, Men and Women Identified -- Photogravures of identified people (964:0166:0001-0013); Identified individuals in alphabetical order (964:0717:0001-0043); Photographs of identified individuals (964:0338:0001-0003, 964:0717:0044-0062); Portrait of unidentified woman (964:0609:0001). Identified individuals include Roald Amundsen, Otto von Bismarck, Albert Einstein, Henrik Ibsen, Koch, Maurice Maeterlinck, Guy de Maupassant, Karl Marx, Mill, John Ruskin, Smiles, Walt Whitman, Emile Zola, John Leighton, Eadweard Muybridge, and Antoine Claudet.

Box 4, People -- Approximately half of the people featured are identified. Many of the prints are mounted and were likely removed from albums. The photographs include single and group portraits, people outdoors engaged in sports and other activities, and Westminster Abbey. Some of the photographs were reproduced in the Gernsheims' publications (964:0104:0001-0210).

Box 5, Royalty -- Edward VII (964:0105:0001-0008); Alexandra (964:0105:0009); Alfred (964:0105:0010-0014); George V (964:0105:0015-0017); British royalty railcars (964:0105:0018-0023); British peerage (964:0105:0024-0031); and European royalty and peerage (964:0105:0032-0040).

Box 6, Movie Stars -- Photographic prints of early to mid-20th century American and British actors and actresses, most of whom are identified. Among those included are: Fred Astaire, Ingrid Bergman, Charles Boyer, Noel Coward, Joan Crawford, Dame Edith Evans, Douglas Fairbanks, Errol Flynn, Henry Fonda, Clark Gable, Greer Garson, Groucho Marx, James Mason, David Niven, Vincent Price, Shirley Temple, Rudolph Valentino, John Wayne, and Orson Welles (964:0106:0001-0067). Also included are six autographed, tabloid tear sheets that include the following: Rod La Rocque, Greta Nissen, Gloria Swanson, and Anna May Wong (964:0106:0068-0073).

The photograph formerly described as "End of Opium War (panorama)" was transferred to the Felice Beato Photography Collection (PH-01008) and is listed under the accession number 964:0107:0019.

Box 19 - Photographs of works of art (76 items). Included are the 1860-1861 Prospectus for the Art Union of Glasgow (Glasgow: [Art Union of Glasgow], 1861) [copy 1] . Three pages on 1 sheet, folded, accompanied by three copies of "the very beautiful line engraving on steel, by Lumb Stocks, after the painting by W. P. Frith, R.A., entitled "Many Happy Returns of the Day." Albumen prints, individually mounted (964:0126:0001-0003), and 1860-1861 Prospectus for the Art Union of Glasgow (Glasgow: [Art Union of Glasgow], 1861) [copy 2] . Three pages on 1 sheet, folded, accompanied by "a selection of Parian Statuettes". Albumen prints of five different neoclassical statues, individually mounted. Three of the statues are after William Beattie and depict the three muses Thalia, Terpsichore, and Euterpe (964:0127:0001-0003). The other two are of a winged nike and a woman, possibly Rebecca, with an urn (964:0127:0004-0005).
