Description:

Photograph album compiled by Sir Henry George Louis Crichton (British, 1844-1922) that contains 239 albumen prints and 1 gelatin silver print. Many of the photographs are accompanied by identifying inscriptions, and with one exception are all dated between 1870 and 1874. The other print () has an inscription by John Arthur Crichton (British, 1883-1917), Sir Henry's son, dated 1915. The photographs are primarily commercial views of India (82), England (60), Italy (50), Egypt (24), Switzerland (8), Scotland (6), Malta (5), Yemen (3), and Jerusalem (2). The majority of images are of landscapes, architecture, monuments, native peoples, and art works. Also included are a number of group portraits of British military groups, some of which include Crichton, including the 10th Royal Hussars in which Crichton was a Lieutenant-Colonel. Another group portrait feature the Rajah of Bhurtpore (i.e., Bharatpur) in Durbar with his court. There are also several portrait of Crichton with his horse. While most of the photographs are by unknown creators, credited photographers include: Samuel Bourne (British, 1834-1912) (34 prints); Florentin Charnaux (Swiss, 1819-1883) (4 prints); Shepherd & Robertson (active in India 1862-1864?) (4 prints); Antonio Beato (British, circa 1830-1903) (3 prints); Giacomo Brogi (Italian, 1822-1881) (3 prints); Auguste Garcin (Swiss, 1816-1895) (3 prints); Bourne & Shepherd (active in India, established about 1868) (2 prints); John Edward Saché (German, active in the United States and India, 1824-1882) (2), George Washington Wilson (Scottish, 1823-1893) (2 prints); and W. L. Caney (British?, active circa 1870s) (1 print). An additional five photographs can be attributed to Bourne, and a photograph of Cleopatra’s Needle (975:0037:0162) has been attributed to the French photographer Ermé Désiré (French, born 1830).
