Description: |
Photographic album, titled Photographic Views. Crimea, India &c. &c. [a.k.a., the Dew Album], assembled during the late 1850s by Frederick Napleton Dew, a member of the 88th Regiment (The Connaught Rangers). The album is inscribed: "Fredk. Dew, 88th Connaught Rangers," and it contains 72 photographic images, 62 of which are mounted (21 salted paper prints, 41 albumen prints), and 10 of which are laid in (all albumen?). Three of the images are panoramic photographs comprised of several prints each. The photographs reflect Dew’s early military career when he served in the Crimean War and in the Indian Mutiny Campaign where he was present at the sieges of both Lucknow and Calpee and at the operations in Oudh. The album begins with 20 photographs of Sevestopol’ and Balaclava, showing the war destruction, particularly of the two forts, the Redan and the Malakoff. The destruction caused by the Sepoy Rebellion in Delhi and Lucknow is documented by 26 photographs. The album also contains 15 individual and group portraits of military personnel, most of whom are unidentified, many of which were taken at Colchester, England. Also included are five views of Constantinople (Istanbul, Turkey), three views of Athens, Greece, a view of the Garden of Gethsemane in Jerusalem, a view of Dew’s quarters in Malta in 1855, and a view of a military tent camp in an unidentified location. Thirteen of the photographs are signed (10 by James Robertson, 3 by Robertson & Beato). Of the remaining photographs, Gernsheim attributed another 18 to Robertson and 20 to Felice Beato. Based on Dew’s inscriptions, the photographers’ dates of activity, and the images depicted, the photographs can be dated from 1854 to circa 1859. |
