Description:

Set of three large albums, entitled Voyage en Espagne, dated 1882, containing a total of 152 photographs. Nearly all of the photographs are credited to Jean Laurent y Minier (French, 1816-1886, active in Spain) and his Madrid-based studio, J. Laurent y Cia (late 1850s-1892). Each album measures approximately 50 x 40 cm (19 11/16 x 15 3/4 inches), and only print appears per leaf. Most of the prints measure either approximately 34 x 25 cm (13 3/8 x 9 13/16 inches) or 25 x 34 cm (9 13/16 x 13 3/8 inches).

Volume I contains 49 mounted albumen prints of places, architecture, sculpture, and furnishings in Burgos, Valladolid, Salamanca, Madrid, and the Escorial.

Volume II contains 50 mounted albumen prints also of places, architecture, and sculpture in Spain, including images of the Cathedral and Plaza de Zocodover in Toledo, the Mosque-Cathedral, Alcazar, and San Juan de los Reyes in Cordoba and the Alhambra in Grenada.

Volume III contains 53 mounted albumen prints of Seville and Barcelona, Spain, and of Portugal. In addition to the subjects found in the other two volumes, there are 12 photographs of people. These are not portraits but are meant to represent "typical" Spanish people including farmers, a toreador, and peasants. Volume 3 also includes 2 photographs of carriages.
