DESCRIPTION


HRC 33 Vita et gesta Alexandri Magni. England: 13th century. 47 leaves: parchment, 250 x 161 mm. Written in Latin, Gothic textualis script. Layout is 35 long lines. Decorated with red and blue initials. Original manuscript (fol. 1v, 4r-5v, 8r-11v, 14r-41v) supplemented by Francis Blomefield, Rector of Fersfield, who transcribed the missing sections from a manuscript at Corpus Christi College (here called Bennet College), Cambridge in 1726, in an effort to perfect the manuscript. Binding: Bound in full brown reverse tanned calfskin over binder's board, probably 19th century. Provenance: [No. lxi in a medieval English library?]; in 1723 given by Elizabeth Barker to Francis Blomefield (of Gonville and Caius College Cambridge, later rector of Fersfield, Norfolk); Thomas Martin of Palgrave; Reverend Richard Farmer (sold London, 1798, no. 8082); Sir Richard Heber (acquired 1811, sold in 1836); Sir Thomas Phillipps (1792-1872), no. 2367 (sold 1895); passed through a number of booksellers including Christopher, Quaritch, and Otto Harrassowitz before arriving at the Ransom Center; for a full description of provenance, see De Ricci, University of Texas no. 2.
