DESCRIPTION


HRC 89 Higford, William (1581?-1657). Institutions, or Advice to his Grandson, in Three Parts. [Dixton, Gloucester?], England: circa 1643-1658. 82 leaves: 244 x 188 mm. Written in English with several quotations in Latin. Higford's text was published as Institution of a Gentleman in III Parts in 1658 and 1660. Also included are several Latin anagrams on the names John Higford (the grandson) and three Scudamores, none of which is included in the printed editions of this text. At the end is a prayer beginning "O Lord God prepare my unprepared heart to pray unto thee... " signed Jo[hn] Porter. One leaf removed at the end with loss of text. Binding: Bound in full calfskin. Provenance: Presumably from the collection of Sir Henry St. George (1581-1644), Garter King of Arms; no. 295 or 293 written on a round paper spine label; acquired by Sir Thomas Phillipps (1792-1872) in 1852, his square label (Ph. 13098) is on the spine; the initials of Phillipps' grandson, Thomas FitzRoy Fenwick, dated 1893, are on the back pastedown; acquired by the Ransom Center in 1966 from the Cline Collection.
