Avon Books was founded by the American News Corporation in 1941. In 1959 the firm was sold to the Hearst Corporation, and in 1999 it was sold by Hearst to News Corporation, where it was incorporated into HarperCollins. See www.newscorp.com and www.harpercollins.com.

The publishing firm of Auburn House was acquired by Greenwood Publishing Group in 1989. The use of the name Auburn House was discontinued from 2002, when Auburn House was absorbed into Praeger (q.v.).

Atlantic Monthly Press was founded in 1917 as the publishing division of the Atlantic Monthly Company. In 1993 the firm was merged with Grove Press to form Grove/Atlantic Inc. See www.groveatlantic.com.

Atheneum Publishers

The firm of Atheneum Publishers was founded in New York in 1959. In 1978 the firm was acquired by Charles Scribner's Sons, which in turn was acquired by the US Macmillan company in 1984. See the FOB entry for Macmillan, Inc., which describes the complex arrangements for the break-up of that company after the death of Robert Maxwell. According to the Simon & Schuster website, Atheneum was included in the part of Charles Scribner's Sons which was acquired by Simon & Schuster in 1994. Athene Publishing Co. Ltd

The Athene Publishing Co. of Wellingborough and London was closely associated with Thorsons in the 1950s and 1960s. By 1967 the firm was described as a subsidiary of Thorsons. Athenaeum

The Athenaeum magazine was founded in 1828 and continued until 1921, when it was incorporated into 'The Nation'. In the 1920s the title 'The Nation and Athenaeum' was often used. In 1931 'The Nation and Athenaeum' was taken over by 'The New Statesman'. See www.newstatesman.com/nsabout.htm.

Astor-Honor, Inc.

The publishing firm of McDowell, Obolensky was founded in New York in 1957 by David McDowell and Ivan Obolensky. In 1960 McDowell left the firm, which continued as Ivan Obolensky, Inc. In 1967 the firm was reconstituted as Astor-Honor, Inc., publishing Astor Books and Honor Books. Astor-Honor went out of business in 1968. B. C. DeckerThe Philadelphia publishing firm B. C. Decker was founded by Brian C. Decker in 1981. It was purchased by Mosby (a division of Times Mirror) in 1990. Mosby was purchased by Harcourt Brace & Company from Times Mirror in 1998, and the Harcourt Group was in turn purchased by Reed Elsevier in 2001. B. T. Batsford LtdThe publishing firm of B. T. Batsford Ltd was founded in 1843. The firm went into receivership in the 1990s and was subsequently acquired by Chrysalis Books. Baillière, Tindall & CoxThe medical publishing firm of Baillière, Tindall & Cox was founded in 1869, when A. A. Tindall and William Cox purchased the business of the late Jean-Baptiste Baillière. The firm was purchased by Cassell and traded as Baillière, Tindall & Cassell in the 1960s and 1970s. It formed part of the purchase of Cassell by CBS in 1982, and then the purchase of the book-publishing business of CBS by Harcourt Brace Jovanovich in 1986. The Harcourt Group was in turn purchased by Reed Elsevier in 2001. After the sale of the Harcourt businesses in 2007-2008, Baillière, Tindall & Cox remains part of Reed Elsevier.
