Hawthorn Books, Inc.

The publishing firm of Hawthorn Books, Inc. was founded by Kenneth S. Giniger in 1952 as a subsidiary of Prentice-Hall. In 1967 the firm was sold to the Clement Stone interests, and in 1977 it was sold on to W. H. Allen. The firm was closed in 1977, but its publishing assets were bought by E. P. Dutton. Harvill Press

Harvill Press was founded in 1946 by Manya Harari and Marjorie Villiers. The firm was purchased in 1955 by William Collins, but became independent again in 1995 through a management buyout. Harrap

The firm of Harrap was founded by George Harrap in 1901. In 1992 the firm was acquired by W. & R. Chambers (then owned by Group de la Cité), and the firm became known as Chambers Harrap. Chambers Harrap is now a Hachette Livre UK company. See www.chambersharrap.co.uk.

Harper & Row

Harper & Row was founded in 1962 by the merger of the firms of Harper & Brothers and Row, Peterson & Co. Both the predecessor firms have their own entry in FOB. The firm of Harper & Brothers was founded in New York City in 1817 by James and John Harper. It was originally called J. and J. Harper. In 1962 Harper & Brothers merged with the Illinois publishing firm of Row, Peterson & Co. to form Harper & Row. Harold Shaw Publishers

Harold Shaw Publishers was founded as a Christian publishing house in Wheaton, Illinois. In 2000 the firm was purchased by Random House, which is owned by Bertelsmann, and Shaw Books is now part of the WaterBrook Multnomah group within Random House. See www.randomhouse.com and www.bertelsmann.com.

Harleyford Books

Harleyford Books was purchased by Arms & Armour in 1981. Arms & Armour was purchased by Cassell in 1987. Cassell was purchased by Hachette in 1998, and subsequently divided. See the FOB entry for Cassell. It is not believed that the name "Harleyford" has been used for publishing since 1981.
