Typescript and printout drafts, correspondence, research materials and notes, editorial,
records, audio recordings, books, magazines, journals, and newspaper clippings document
the
life and work of Barbara Probst Solomon from 1948 to 2012. The five series are arranged
by
size: I. Correspondence, 1948-2012; II. Writings, 1958-2011; III. Subject and Name

1943-2012; IV. Periodicals, 1949-2005; V. Clippings, 1950s-2011. |

Series I. Correspondence, spans eleven boxes and constitutes the bulk of the archive.
The
series is arranged chronologically from 1948 to 2012. Correspondents of note include
Manuel
Gutiérrez Aragón, José María Álvarez, Paco Benet, Juan Benet, Norman Birnbaum, Darío
Fernández Flórez, Herbert Gold, Juan Goytisolo, Rita Hinden, Norman Mailer, Frederick
Manfred, Mildred Marmur, Cynthia Ozick, William Philips, Driss Rekab, Anatole Shub,
Clancy
Sigal, and Ricardo Muñoz Suay. Of further note are two folders (12.3-4) of previously
restricted correspondence
with Saul Bellow, Norman Mailer, Pepe Martinez, and Philip Roth opened for access
in 2019. |

Series II. Writings, is divided into two subseries: A. Short works and B. Long works.
The
Series spans five boxes and documents Solomon’s literary activities from 1958-2011.
Subseries A. Short works, includes late and or final typescript and printout drafts
of
articles submitted for publication, spanning 1983-2011. The subseries is arranged
alphabetically by the title of the publication. Subseries B. Long works comprises
correspondence and press clippings for Arriving Where We Started
(1972), The Beat of Life (1960), Los felices cuarenta (1978), Short Flights (1983), and Operation Ogro (1975), correspondence and a typescript draft for
unrealized novel Jake and Sally: A Chicago Love Story (1975), and a
typescript draft and press clippings for Smart Hearts in the City (1992).
The subseries is arranged alphabetically by title. |

Series III. Subject and Name Files documents Solomon's research interests through
press
clippings, correspondence, programs, drafts, photocopy and original articles torn
from
publications, notes and other assorted materials. Topics include Francoist Spain,
Vichy
France, Nazi war criminals, with particular emphasis on the Klaus Barbie trial, Norman
Mailer, Juan Benet, and Josep Pallach. The series also includes several drafts of
articles
and correspondence with Juan Goytisolo. The series is arranged alphabetically by
subject. |

The last two series, Series IV. Periodicals and Series V. Clippings, document Solomon’s
literary activities as a journalist and an essayist from 1949 to 2011. Series IV.
Periodicals, includes complete magazines and journals in which Solomon is published.
Particularly well represented is the Spanish political magazine Cambio 16 for which she has been a longtime correspondent. The
Series is arranged alphabetically by periodical title. Series V. Clippings includes
articles, interviews, and essays by (and occasionally about) Solomon in the form of
clippings and photocopies with occasional drafts. The series is arranged
chronologically. |
