Description: |
Set of 45 gelatin silver stereoscopic prints that were primarily published by Underwood & Underwood likely between 1897 and 1905. Other publishers include Keystone View Company and J. F. Jarvis. The stereographs were originally contained in a case made to look like two books. On each "spine" of the container, the title "Rome through the Stereoscope" and "Volume I" and "Volume II" are printed. The stereographs are accompanied by a copy of D. J. (Daniel James) Ellison's Rome through the Stereoscope: Journeys in and about the Eternal City (New York and London: Underwood & Underwood, 1902). The book, which includes folded maps, is meant to accompany a set of 46 stereographs. The Ransom Center's set is lacking stereographs no. 20, 26, 29, 34 and 43, and it includes two versions of both no. 1 and no. 15, and two copies with an additional version of no. 16, which is erroneously numbered no. 18. The imprint dates on the stereographs run from 1897 to 1905. Each stereograph is mounted on a curved card with a title, set number, and publication information printed on the recto. Some cards also have a longer narrative description printed on the back, and/or the title in six languages. The Ransom Center's set contains cards of several different colors, indicating that it is compiled of several different sets. Many bear a stamp on the verso: "Liverpool Agent: Edward Kidson". |
