Description:

The collection consists of 99 stereographs, published by Underwood & Underwood, originally housed in a case made to look like two books. On each "spine" of the container, the title "Egypt through the Stereoscope" and "Volume I" and "Volume II" are printed. Each stereograph is mounted on a curved card with a title, set number, and publication information printed on the recto. Most include copyright dates that fall between 1896 and 1904. A few cards have longer narrative descriptions printed on the verso, or the title in six languages. "Egypt through the Stereoscope" contains images of Egypt, famous monuments, landscapes, cityscapes, people, and animals. The set originally consisted of 100 stereoscopes, but this set is missing card 54, titled "EXCAVATING THE FAMOUS AVENUE OF RAINS, SOUTHEAST TO THE TEMPLE OF KARNAK, THEBES." The set does not include the the accompanying booklet, authored by Dr. James Henry Breasted, a professor of Egyptology at the University of Chicago and director of the trip that produced the stereographs.
