Description:

The William Lake Price album, which likely dates between 1855 and 1860, is perhaps the best single-volume manifestation of the taste and style of Victorian photography and art in mid-nineteenth century Britain. Not only does it contain works by many of the key figures in the history of British photography, but it also reflects the taste and sensibilities of Price, one of the largely unsung practitioners, writers and promoters of the early art. Between its covers there lies an intensive and persuasive revelation about Victorian art and photography and the boundaries which the medium was shattering even in these early years.

Photographers and the number of their prints represented in the album are: Bisson Frères (4); Samuel Buckle (2); William England (1); Roger Fenton (4); Hill & Adamson (1); Lake Price (5); O. G. Rejlander (8); Henry Peach Robinson (1); Ross & Thomson (2); Henry White (8); and George Washington Wilson (2). The photographer(s) responsible for the other 36 photographs is unknown.
