New York was in the 1920 the center of the American theater, as it is today. Most of the playwrights who signed the door are associated not with the major productions of Broadway, but with the little theaters of the Village and with similar small organizations across the country. Some made entire careers as playwrights, but most were active in many other genres of writing as well.
